Privacy Policy

Ummati Community (“Ummati”, “we”, “us”) runs an inclusive women's community in the United States, with local chapters, events and an online member platform. This policy covers our website and the member platform.

We collect the following, and nothing we do not need:

• Account information: your name, email address and password (stored only as a secure hash). If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email and profile picture from Google instead of a password.
• Profile information: anything you choose to add: phone number, date of birth, city, neighborhood, headline, bio, interests, profile photo and social links.
• Membership and payment information: your plan and billing status. Card details are entered directly with our payment processor, Stripe. We never see or store your card number.
• Activity on the platform: posts, comments, reactions, event RSVPs, connection requests and chapter membership.
• Messages you send us: contact form, volunteer applications and partnership enquiries, including any phone number you provide.
• Technical information: basic log data such as IP address and browser type, used for security and to keep the service running.

• To create and run your account and member profile.
• To show you relevant chapters, events, members and suggestions.
• To process membership payments and send billing confirmations.
• To send service messages such as password resets, event reminders and community announcements.
• To keep the community safe: reviewing reports, moderating content and enforcing our guidelines.
• To understand what is working so we can improve the community.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.

Your profile is private by default. You only appear in the member directory if you switch on directory visibility in your profile settings, and you can switch it off again at any time.

• When directory visibility is on, other signed-in members can see your name, photo, headline, bio, interests, city, neighborhood, chapter and any social links you added.
• Your email address, phone number, home address and date of birth are never shown to other members.
• Anything you post publicly in the community feed is visible to other signed-in members.
• Event attendee counts include everyone, but only members who opted into the directory appear by name or photo.

We use a small number of trusted providers to run the service. They only receive what they need:

• Stripe: payment processing and subscription billing.
• Amazon Web Services: secure storage of uploaded images.
• Our email provider: sending account, event and community emails.
• Google: only if you choose to sign in with Google.

We may also disclose information if we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to protect the safety of our members.

• See and edit your data: most of it is editable directly in your profile.
• Control your visibility: the directory toggle in your profile settings.
• Unsubscribe: every marketing email has an unsubscribe link. Essential service emails (like password resets) will still be sent.
• Delete your account: contact us and we will delete your account and erase your personal information. Some records may be retained where we are legally required to keep them, for example payment records.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal information. To exercise any of them, get in touch.

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. If you close your account we delete or anonymise your personal information, except where we must retain records for legal, tax or accounting reasons.

Passwords are hashed, connections are encrypted in transit, and access to member data is limited to the small number of staff who need it. No system is perfectly secure, but we take this seriously, and if a breach ever affected your data, we would tell you.

Ummati is for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

If we make a meaningful change we will update the date at the top of this page and, where the change is significant, let members know directly.
